Learning How to Hydrofoil: Understanding Some Basics
Let's go through some absolute basics for how a hydrofoil works so that you can have a better understanding of what the foil is doing under the water, which in turn helps with progression. a hydrofoil is much like a small aeroplane. It comes under the same forces of Thrust, drag, lift, and weight. It also flies the same and moves in a similar way. Knowing that can help visualise how the foil is behaving. at slower speeds, the hydrofoil will fly pitched up with an increased angle of attack. at a fast speed, the foil shape will generate lift. It's a combination of both of those that help the foil fly and helps the rider, understand how to balance/distribute weight. Learning to hydrofoil is ...

Kitesurfing for Beginners | Where to Position Your Hands on the Bar
It’s always a huge sigh of relief for me once I get my kite in the air. Launching sketches me out, but always trying to get better. Thanks for the video 🙏
Best!!
Can you kitesurf if you are overweight?
If you're a confident swimmer :)
I am definitely a confident and strong swimmer. Thank you! 😊
Interessante 💥 👍
Thanks!
First 1/3 of the video is marketing
I definitely think you are doing things correctly. It reminds me of when windsurfing exploded in the late 70's early 80's and wave boards were tried for the first time with a sail ! From there on it was trial and error shaping short windsurfers. Don't go with the flow - That's just mainstream and what is easiest and sells most and makes most money for the makers. You have the freedom of making things juts how YOU like them. Well done ! In my eyes - but I've actually never foiled ... (however I do know hydrodynamics), the only advantage of a bend in the foil vs a straight foil is to get MORE surface within a given width. It just gives you more lift for a same width. A bit like concave undersides simply give you MORE surface on a windsurfer so that it actually starts planing earlier. Keep on at it. I've done that by necessity all my life and know so much more than the rich guys who simply buy the latest equipment. They are my pool for trying / testing as I often asked if I could try their equipment and took waht was good and left the mainstream behind.
Thanks mate! Yeah its fun making and testing and see what happens
Best tutorial landing technique, Thannks.
Thanks! Glad it helped
I was wondering how it got sort of/up wind?
Hey Steve, we do have another video on riding upwind that might help answer that :)
What a great, informative video - I have my first of 3 lessons tomorrow! Thank you
Have fun!
Great series mate. Well done.
Thanks Steve!
First lesson in an hour. Thanks for prepping me 🙂
Awesome! have fun out there!
This was a really good video mate! 👍 thank you so much!
No problem 👍 Have fun!
Thanks for that video! I'm going to learn all summer long at magdalen islands.
Have fun!
Yes sir thank you i’ve been watching your videos ever since I found you on RUclips man and I’ve learned so so much you’re so informative. I’ve looked at probably hundreds of different videos on learning how to kite surfing and this and that and none of them are as thorough as yours so thank you very much.❤❤
Oh awesome thanks mate I appreciate it!
ur have a very cute smile❤ keep smile like this😘😘

Is it true that kiteboarding is cheap in Hawaii!?
Not sure..
amazing video. also amazzing spot, where is that if anyone knows.
This is the east coast of Aus :)
Wasaga Beach 1 Ontario eh 14 heat attacks later.. Aboot ta help a buddy out .. Need to fly lol
nice haha
Thanks!
No problem!
Very nice explanation. Thanks!
Thanks!
I used this video to work on self launch. Both times I did, I had the line on the underside catch the wingtip and go spiraling out of control. The first time it corrected itself, the second time it did not. It felt very dangerous and uncontrolled.
Yeah if the wing tip catches it can feel crazy. This is one of the reasons some people suggest to have 1 hand on the quick release, or do the launch not even hooked in, so you can let go quickly in that event. That said, normally if the wing tip is catching it means there was no enough tension on the lines while walking the arc.
Thanks, I am trying again today. Will see how it goes.
The kite went up fine today. The secret really was keeping the lines tight throughout the entire setup. Also, I stuck to the flat wet sand area that was free of any debris to catch the lines. Thanks for the help.
@@mastarinki Nice one! glad its working for you and thanks for letting us know :)
Thanks Luke, very clear, very instructional. Greetings from Madrid🌊
For sure! Have fun out there
I've been building mine a few years now since I started wing surfing. It's great to see a nice hand-built front wing. I use 3D printing for all but 1 of my wings. First was composites clad 3D printed core, then a CNC multi laminated ply wing(2650). After that I did all moulds from 3D printed models and laid carbon fibre in them. Necessary for the thinner higher performance ones.
Nice one mate! Thanks for the comment on how your building them!
Excellent explanation. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Really sound advice. Lots of talking but sharing of good sense.
Thanks mate!
Luke. Great stuff. Spot on. My no wind life in san diego has taught me to also use a wave surf skill as well. smooth rail to rail carve combined with a little squat and extend, this is all to pump and make speed. Similar to what a surfer does on a wave face. These can be quick or slow but has to be in sync with the kite. Easier said than done. The wiggle is often the make or break for me getting up to speed in a lull or making it into a wave . Cheers
Nice one! thanks for the comment :)
Hi mates. I can’t find the waist strap on their site. Do you know if they stopped making it? Also have you had any issue during a crash with the waist strap selfie stick attachment? I’m hoping to use mine for surfing but concerned if it will hold in the waves
Hmm, im not sure, i also remember it was hard to find on the site, but was there, maybe in one of the packages. best top shoot them a message and see. And yeah, id be worried using it for surf... I dontr use it, even though it would be epic to wear getting barreled... just the risk of smashing it off on the board or bottom... But on a nice day might be good!
sorry, this is not strong wind as your thumbnail's text. On a 30-40 knots wind you won't be able to pull the lines with bare hands.
That's Gale force. Use this: ruclips.net/video/V10ttsQHtgo/видео.html. Thanks :)
Just say like snowboarding
Snowboarding is a relatable skill, but its not the same :) You use a lot more backfoot kiting.
Dude. You’re the man. This is exactly what I was looking for when I decided it was time to try the build myself. I’m a machinist and fabricator by trade so this should be a breeze. I’m super pumped to get going. Thanks for the FREE plans. I’ll def hit you up if there’s anything I did differently and let you know how it turned out. I will for sure be back to buy the mast, hollowed out aluminum is out of my skill set range. Again, You’ll hear from me again, especially if I figure out a way to make an inexpensive mast of the same strength and weight. Thanks again!
Nice, yeah mate keep us posted!
Great tutorial, I'm going to do a beach run as suggested.
Nice one! Have fun out there!
Do you need to learn how to swim before doing a kite surfing?
Yes.
curious what wood you are using? I shape surfboards and foil boards and I want to start shaping my own custom foils -using production foils as a template- thanks!
Yeah nice, if youre already making boards, making the foil is easy. I'm using cedar, because i have it, but you can use most lighter woods. A good list is wood that is used to make surfboards. Hope that helps and let us know how the build goes!
@@FlukesKitesurfingthanks-- you need to get a pneumatic bladder sander-- I used one for 4 years making guitar necks for Ernie Ball guitars. It is an amazing tool for sculpting curves in wood and a necessity in guitar building
Your explanation is very good but your camera is too much on you and too little on what you are actually explaining - action - movement..even when you pull a line , the camera doesn't show that, show only your upper body and hands doing something... It is just too close to you. We are not def to read your lips... So for me as a beginner video shows almost nothing but I know your every face hair😊
haha nice
Love your content Luke. I’ve watched all of your wave riding vids and enjoy your relaxed demeanour. What would be the chances of you creating a tutorial for on-shore wave riding with a focus on kite positioning and timing etc? Most vids I see are of cross or off-shore riding which isn’t realistic for most Oz east-coasters and focus on rider positioning as opposed to the kite. Love your work!
Thanks mate, yeah that is something i do really want to make actually... season starting here so ill try and get some done!
Thanks ! I have the Ocean Rodeo bar you used in the video. I always had difficulties doing a clean wrap/unwrap on it. You method is perfect. Wonder why I couldn't figure it out myself. Maybe Ocean Rodeo should include this wrap method in the owner's manual for this bar.
Oh nice glad it helped mate!
i had a directionnal board ( no volum board 170/48,TT construction , unfortunatly stolen) with straps, like said, straps locks u in position (never learnt to jib,) on the other hand....u can go fast as your feet are in the straps and u can cut hard trhough the waves or jumbping over them (kinda like windsurfing)
yeah helps with getting locked in for sure!
thanks
No problem!
I just picked up a 2015 ozone reo 12m kite all new bladders with original bar and lines for $500aud a 2 seasons used dakine renegade waist harness for $140aud and a 2014 naish hero 140x43 twintip for $200aud but turns out its a wave riding kite i didnt do my research first but from what i have heard the reo is a very versatile kite and can be used as a freeride or all rounder also im only a beginner myself with my first lesson completed so im unsure if i chose wrong or not i havent had the chance to go out and test the kite for myself just yet.
Hey yeah im sure it will be fine, as mentioned in the video a little older than i like to recommend, but if its well looked after then should still be good. Just take it for a fly in some light wind first to get used to it :)
@@FlukesKitesurfing yeah mate thanks for the bit of confidence boost I'll do just that get to know how it flies I'm already upto body dragging up and down wind in the first lesson. So I'll just keep at it to get some better kite control and use 1 hand like I was doing with the instructor at the end of my first lesson. I think ima just go without more lessons I have a decent idea now and youtube has been an amazing help with the preparation stuff i think I'll be able to manage getting up on the board by myself if I just keep at it and I know learning to edge upwind early is a good thing to do early on for further progression and it will help me become a more confident kiter much quicker.
Very helpful! Thank you for this video!😎
No worries! glad it helped
I found one of your videos on how to build a foil. Thank you very much there was someone that was selling them but then it was dropped put that taken off so I’m building myself thank you. I’m using phone and some wood. Hope it works. The theory is there anyways thank you for all your help.
Awesome! Yeah keep us posted on the build :)
Than😊😊
For sure! :)
Love this 🎉
Awesome thanks :)
Do you believe a wooden mast would hold up?
It can do if you strengthen with Carbon, but check out the last video in the build series where I talk about the reasons why i think its best to use a alloy mast.
@@FlukesKitesurfing Will do, thanks!
